Something you should know about me, I keep things… like EVERYTHING!!! I find it so hard to get rid of random items like old cards, ticket stubs and scrap wood! In addition to being overly sentimental, I often fear if I get rid of something I might then need it (or want it)! As you can imagine, I have drawers and bins filled with treasures and completely mundane objects… all of which I am holding on to (because you just never know)!
Now let’s talk about wood. I am the exact same way! I don’t like to throw scrap pieces out because it could be used in the future (maybe?!). So I keep as many scrap pieces as I can and often reuse it. Usually a new product is formed because I see a scrap piece and an idea will come to me! Case in point, the holiday word ornaments!
I had a ton of scrap wood, all in the shape of circles (they actually were all leftover pieces of our holiday ornaments) and I just could not throw them out. So I thought about what I might be able to do with them and an idea quickly formed! “What if I made a simple ornament that featured a fun festive word?” I liked where my mind was going, so I began to pursue the thought. I started brainstorming possible words to use and let me tell you, my list grew rather quickly!
I then took to the computer to find the perfect font. I went with a handwritten script typeface. I liked the effortless vibe and carefree feel of the curves each letter provided. Once I was happy with the font, I mocked up the design with possible colors I would use for painting the pieces and instantly fell in love! The bold contrast of the dark brown paired with the bright cheery red, vibrant teal and holiday green was the exact look I was going for. Take that and pair it with the white of the words and I was ecstatic!
What I love about this ornament is how seamless it came together from concept to completion. I also totally love that the whole concept stemmed from me not wanting to be wasteful and trying to reuse as much scrap materials as possible!
